This Spark AR project needed 3D art, 3D Animation, and Technical Artistry and Design. As a generalist, the type of project I’m more than happy to execute. The brief for this project was fairly simple, for the Double Masters release, Wizards of the Coast wanted to release a pair of Instagram filters that engaged players to choose a faction, Angel or Devil, to celebrate a widely anticipated release for a set packed with powerful cards.
What follows are my works in progress all of which I am responsible for, with the exception being the reference material.
zbrush
3d studio max
spark ar studio
As with any project, there are hours and hours of work not shown in the final product, some of which ill list here:
Scripted / Animated real time lights with controllable speed / color parameters
Attachment point in 3d space with inherited movement for the wings placement
Triggers for actions on the users face, or in the users environment
Custom material shaders
Animation control and seamless looping
And may others.
Wrapping it up, creating filters for Instagram involved a lot of different areas of my expertise. It was more akin to application development or game development than I expected, with tons of experimentation, and debugging to get the project across the finish line. The metrics on the project were some of the highest engagement numbers for that year, and its a feeling I continue to pursue.
